FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: ZANDRA MESHACK-EDISON

Hello my name is Zandra Meshack-Edison

I am the founder and CEO of the Thrive Meshack-Edison Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting transitional, affordable housing for women. My decision to focus on owning and operating transitional housing in the San Diego, CA area is deeply personal, rooted in my own experiences.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to lovingly address the needs of women and their children experiencing homelessness by providing a safe transitional housing environment, incorporating values such as honesty, integrity, accountability, and responsibility that will assist individuals in breaking the cycle of the addiction, judicial involvement, and homelessness.
Due to the cost of insurance, and other factors we will be servicing women only at this time…eventually, we plan to allow women to be housed with their children. However, one of our primary goals is the reunification of women and their children, post incarceration.

What we do

We provide transitional, affordable housing for women.  Women newly released from incarceration, who have the support of family, friends, or rehabilitative services, have a significantly lower likelihood of subsequent arrests. They are less likely to be reincarcerated, commit less violence, and exhibit higher rates of school completion and college enrollment.

Restorative justice programming is crucial for building a kinder and more just San Diego.

Our Services

Thrive Meshack Edison

Here is a list of issues to be addressed and services to be provided by our agency.

Core Values

We are led by the guiding principle of love as we strive to assist survivors of incarceration, abuse, and trauma in reclaiming their lives. Our mission goes beyond providing temporary relief; we are dedicated to empowering those in need to achieve self-sufficiency and thrive through meaningful, permanent lifestyle changes. Rooted in empathy and understanding, our approach emphasizes peer-to-peer support and access to community-based resources.

Community support

Women newly released from incarceration, who have the support of family, friends, or rehabilitative services, have a significantly lower likelihood of subsequent arrests. They are less likely to be reincarcerated, commit less violence, and exhibit higher rates of school completion and college enrollment. Moreover, they tend to earn higher incomes in adulthood. Statistical analysis reveals that supporting restorative justice programming is crucial for building a kinder and more just San Diego.

Challenges and Disadvantages

Compared to women in the general population, incarcerated women report a significantly higher prevalence of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, as well as multiple forms of household dysfunction before the age of 18

Identifying the need

Drug Offenses: Drug offenses were a significant factor in female arrests. Approximately 25% of women in state prisons were incarcerated due to drug-related charges. This percentage is higher than that of men, where only 12% were convicted of drug offenses.

Making a Difference

Supporting our organization, dedicated to addressing the needs of women and children experiencing homelessness, holds immense benefits for both individuals and the broader community. Research demonstrates that homelessness among formerly incarcerated women is a pervasive issue, hindering successful reentry and increasing the risk of recidivism. by supporting our organization, you’re not only investing in the lives of women and children experiencing homelessness but also contributing to a kinder, more just society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Doing The Math

Correctional facilities in the United States release approximately 78,000 women per year, equating to more than 200 every day. The majority of incarcerated females are parents to 2.5 children under the age of 18 Thus, in any given year, almost 200,000 American children experience the incarceration and subsequent reentry of their primary caregiver.

The Goal

The goal of the Thrive Meshack-Edison Foundation is clear,
to empower underprivileged, formerly incarcerated, and homeless women to lead clean and sober lives, facilitate family reunification, and assist women in maintaining or regaining custody of their children. Education on thriving, not just surviving, is paramount. We firmly believe  that many of our Board Members/Board of Directors ‘ journeys through adversity positions us to make a positive impact on the community of San Diego, and hopefully, beyond.
